Sailing Away

The first major event of the day was driving from Skradin to Zadar.   On the drive I had a bad cold, and I was hot and grumpy.  My parents, I think, have gotten used to the heat because they seemed to take no notice of the hot weather.

Our sailing trip started with us waiting in Zadar for a speed boat to pick us up from the docks and take us to the island of Ugljan off the coast of Zadar.   Our sailing boat was docked on Ugljan.  The speed boat at first went slowly out of the harbor.  After a couple minutes though, the driver sped up!  The ride was very bumpy.  We were shot up into the sky off the waves and then banged back down.  It was super fun!

When we finally arrived at the island marina, we met our skipper.  His name is Ivan.  I think he is going to teach the three of us how to sail.  After we had gone shopping for provisions, we were good to go!  For our first experience on a sail boat we just motored because we had no wind.

After a couple of hours, we stopped in a little bay that Ivan knows about.
It had a really interesting restaurant.  You see, in the U.S. when we eat fish, we just eat a prepared little piece of fish meat.  Here though, they clean out the guts of the fish and just throw the dead fish on the plate.  Shrimp was also the same way.  It was a little scary, but I ate the fish and shrimp anyway.  They didn’t taste very good.

Last night I was super tired so, I am writing this today.  I’m going to be posting this when we have internet again.

  1. Hi Rohan,
I didn't expect to see new posts while you are sailing, but am glad to hear about your past couple of days.
I know what you mean about being unable to sail when there is no wind. I didn't like the smell or the sound of the motor when I sailed in the Galapagos. And recently on Lake Erie, when there was no wind, I had to jump in the water to get away from biting flies! Ugh.
Also, I don't believe I would want to eat raw fish or shrimp. Now, oysters are different - they are delicious fresh.
    Love, Grandma Doris
