Saying Goodbye to the Jungle

Today was full of long and endless travel.  At 6:00 in the morning, our Group left the lodge in the paddle canoe.  After about an hour and a half of paddling we switched into the motor canoe, and, two hours later, finally came to the town of Coca.  From getting up at 5:00 AM, I was exhausted, but I managed a short forty-five minute plane ride.  On the plane was our entire group, even our naturalist guide, Lena.

During the plane from Coca to Quito, I read the Mount Doom chapter of the Lord of the Rings.  Gollum cut the ring off Frodo’s hand and fell into the Cracks of Doom with the Isildur’s Bane.  Sauron and all of Mordor are falling a part and it is so exciting!  I only have about eighty more pages in the entire book!  What an accomplishment it will be to finish the complete Lord of the Rings series!  I was interrupted by the loud speaker announcing that the plane was about to land in Quito.

Once we got off the plane, we were forced to say goodbye to the German and Dutch couples in our group.  Especially, we said farewell to our guide, Lena. The four of us had become fast friends and we were sad to leave each other to go out separate ways.

We are now sitting in our hotel room relaxing and smiling.  In an hour, we are having dinner with Dan and his family.  Every six months, Dan, Estefa and Ariel leave Tena and go to the US.  Our timing worked out such that we are in Quito the night they are connecting to go to North Carolina.  Tomorrow, we fly to the Galapagos and I can hardly contain myself!

RoGeo news:

  1. Today today
    The Rays play
    The Jays
    And I must say
    That it's ok
    For them to slay
    Said Jays
    And hey
    Anyway
    Them Jays
    Have feet of clay
    And will obey
    Our fav Rays
    Whose fans shout Yea!
    And who will pray
    For Tampa Bay
    Today today

    1. Thanks for the hilarious poem!
I tried writing one myself, but there is no way it would have compared to yours!

  2. Well, I guess our prayers didn't work so well!! Rays lost to the Jays but I'm confident they will come back today to redeem themselves. Your photos were terrific. Loved all of the bird photos. I have some friends who are birders and I'm sure they will love seeing them and hearing your descriptions. I'm anxious to hear how you like the Galapagos. Enjoy! xoxo Grandmalish

  3. I am the Future!!! The Rays beat the Jays 12-2 the second day, and 9-4 the third!

    P.s.
Did you watch the Rays play the first game? They were doing pretty badly.
